Ambergris Caye Schools

SCHOOLS IN SAN PEDRO, AMBERGRIS CAYE

Ambergris Caye has been growing and to date has a population of approx 18,000+ year-round inhabitants, with many newcomers from abroad as streaming in as well. Because of this, we’ve seen an increase in the demand for schools on the island.

If you are considering making San Pedro your new home and have children, here is some information you’ll need to know.

Belize schools have their system patterned after the British system of education. Students enroll at age 5 into Infant 1 and continue through to Standard VI (the equivalent of 8th grade). The curriculum reflects our Caribbean/Central American location and standards. The school year starts in late August and runs until June with 2 breaks in between.

So where will you enroll your kids? Great question! All schools are unique and have something to offer. Below is some information that should help in making that very important decision.

A Few Schools on Ambergris Caye

The Island Academy is a private school with one of the largest outdoor area available for their students. This school is my favorite, my kid actually attends this school. It’s located in a spot all parents will envy, right smack on a beachfront property with spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea.. (Wish I had gone there as a kid) The classrooms are small and quaint. They have a small student to teacher ratio, meaning attention to detail and to your child’s needs. The school models the American standards and curriculum.

A.C.E.S, Ambergris Caye Elementary School and La Isla Bonita, This is a private school that has become popular and has grown in size over the last few years. They have a small number of students per classroom, which is great as it offers more room and attention from the teacher.

The New Horizon is a church-run public School. They are the 3rd largest school on the Island. They have great teachers and always score very high of end of year Primary School Examination nationwide.

One of the first schools established on the island is the San Pedro RC School. This is a public school and although it’s a Catholic school they accept students of any denomination. At this school, the Government of Belize provides funding for teachers’ salaries. This school is the largest of all schools, however, they always place very high countrywide on results for Primary School Examinations.
