Belize Farmers Market – Ambergris Caye Belize

One of the extra bonuses of traveling to Belize is having the opportunity to taste tropical exotic fruits!

Several fruits like Bananas, watermelon and pineapples and mangos have a longer shelf life and can easily be transported to the USA, hence they are readily available at your local markets. However there are many other exotic fruits that don’t, and can only be enjoyed while in the tropics. So don’t shy away from trying something new.

Here in Ambergris Caye you’ll find many different fruit and veggie stands all around town. However if you want a good experience on how many locals get their fruits and veggies you’ll need to try the local farmer’s market every Tuesday morning on the lagoon side of the island.

Every Tuesday morning we make a trip to the back of the island also known as “el barcadero” were 3 to 4 different boats line up as early as 5am. They sail from Corozal or Belize City to be here on time to supply the islanders with fresh produce. It’s unbelievable the amount of produce they bring on those sail boats. If you get there early enough to see them unload, it’s a never ending supply. But, as soon as they start unloading, the supplies diminish quickly as islanders start rushing for the best of the bunch…Before you know it there is not much left.

Here the prices are cheaper, and the product is fresher but the characters you encounter are priceless. You can get a whole bunch of bananas for a mere $2.50USD, fresh watermelon, sour sap, passion fruits, cantaloupe, custard apples, oranges, grapefruits, limes and much more. You can even fruits like strawberries and Kiwi which at the local fruit stands are really expensive…You’ll find them here for a little less.

Not to mention the fresh crispy veggies. You’ll find everything from green sweet peppers, onions, garlic, broccoli and cauliflower, fresh sweet carrots, and the list goes on. But it all starts really early so if you want the best of the bunch set your alarm. That said, if you are not an early bird and still want the best, you can always pre order. You can call them a day in advance and place your order they would be more than happy to separate and save it there for you to pick up later.

Contrary to what you may have heard, life on Ambergris Caye does not have to be expensive… Little tricks like this and many others can save you not only time but good money… For More information on life in Ambergris caye, email me at RemaxBelize(at)outlook(dotted)com.
