Life In Belize – Deep Drop Fishing Adventures
Many years ago I wondered what life in Belize would be like. Would I tire of everyday life on the Island of Ambergris Caye? Would I get homesick and be ready to head back to the US after only a short time? I have to say that after 14 wonderful years I can still answer an emphatic NO to that question. Life in Belize has been a real pleasure, a dream come true! Since I am an outdoorsy kind of person I have found that there is always an adventure to be had living on Ambergris Caye or Belize in general.
If you’ve read some of my other posts or know me personally, you know that I love to spend allot of time fishing the waters of Belize. If the weather is good, there is a good chance I am on my boat enjoying all that the Caribbean has to offer in terms of fishing. I tend to go through phases when it comes to fishing, while I love to spearfish, I do mix it up from time to time. A different type of fishing that I have enjoyed is what they call “Deep Drop” fishing. This type of fishing is exciting because you never quite know what you’re going to pull up from the depths of the Caribbean. You’ll see species of fish come to the surface that you’ve never seen before. It’s in a word “awesome!”
The great thing about this type of fishing is that you don’t really have to be a skilled angler to enjoy it. It’s quite simple really, all you need is a depth finder, a heavy duty rod/reel setup and allot of lead.. Once you find your desired depth and structure you’ll drop a rig of 3-4 hooks weighted with 12 ounces of lead straight down. (We have been fishing depths of 400-600 feet) If you find a good spot with structure, usually as soon as you hit bottom the bites start.. My kind of fishing! You’re likely thinking, wait a minute 400-600 ft! Sounds like allot of reeling, I know. While it is in fact allot of work (unless you have an electric reel, but what’s the fun in that) it’s well worth the effort. Not to mention the excitement of reeling in massive fish, which I have to say from experience, Belize has some monstrous fish at those depths.
If ever visiting Belize ask a tour guide about this type of fishing, you’ll be glad you did. If you are exploring the Belize Real Estate market with the plans of relocating to Belize, don’t worry you won’t ever be bored, there’s plenty of things to do to keep you busy. Every day can be a new adventure as long as you know where to look!
