5 Can’t Miss Activities for Your Next Visit to Caye Caulker

Ask anyone who’s been to Belize what they enjoy about it, and the answers will almost always involve the laid back atmosphere, slower pace, breezy beaches and endless opportunities to completely immerse oneself in the culture.

Caye Caulker is a favorite spot in Belize for all of this. The small island is right off the coast of Belize. On the northern part of the island, you’ll find lush tropical forest and bountiful wildlife, including an incredibly diverse bird population. The island is divided by a narrow channel called the split, which is one of the preferred spots on the island for relaxing on a beautiful, sandy beach.

Sounds amazing, right? There’s even more. Here are our five favorite not-to-miss activities on Caye Caulker

Diving in Caye Caulker
There are shallow dives all around Caye Caulker that are enjoyable for the expert and novice diver alike. Diving has long been a favorite pastime on the island. Divers will find amazing sea life and views of beautiful abundant coral all around.

Caye Caulker is also a perfect starting point for day trip diving excursions to further locations. The Great Blue Hole is one of the most famous diving spots and only about a 2-hour boat ride from Caye Caulker.

Hang Out at the Split

The Split runs from the east to the west side of the island. There’s a rumor that it was created by a fierce hurricane, but locals will tell you that it’s actually man made by residents that dredged it out after a hurricane had opened an area only a few inches deep.

Regardless of the origin, it’s a favorite island spot. You’ll want to visit the Lazy Lizard and hang out to really get a feel for the local culture. There’s beaches, water, sun, and right across the channel is rope swing and jumping platform for the adventurous. It’s the perfect spot for soaking up the flavor of Belize.

Kayak to the North Island

Diving and snorkeling aren’t the only water activities on the island. Try renting a kayak and coasting along up to the northern part of the island where you’ll be able to explore the mangrove forest and partake in a little bird watching. Speaking of which…

Bird Watching

Belize is home to over 500 native and migratory species of birds. The mangrove forests in the northern part of Caye Caulker are one of the favorite spots for catching glimpses of the amazing bird life. You can schedule a tour and enjoy a leisurely but exciting two-hour tour of the area by boat. Just make sure to bring your birding binoculars.

Taste the Island

While on Caye Caulker, make sure you make the time to take in some of the island cuisine. You’ll find a mixture of Caribbean cuisine along with other island favorites like Chinese and Italian.
